Two New Bathroom Showrooms Take Significant Steps Forward

We’ve had plans to develop a bathroom showroom at our Aviemore branch for some time now.  Finally, the building warrant for the internal works has been granted and planning permission for the external signage has been approved.

Works started on the 27th of November and are expected to be completed in early 2018.

Similarly, we have plans to develop a small bathroom showroom in Portree.  Fit out is expected to start in early 2018.

Celebrating 50 Years of Success in Elgin and Moray

Our Elgin branch opened on the Pinefield Estate in Elgin in 1967.  So, we’ve been trading successfully, serving the Plumbers and Heating Engineers of Elgin and Moray, for more than 50 years now!  

On Friday the 17th of November 2017, we decided to hold a trade show, open day and evening party to celebrate.

New Branch Manager Colin Brand said: “After discussion with our supporting suppliers, the general opinion was the customers they spoke to were of good quality, and that both our customers and suppliers got something from the day.”

Suppliers who attended included:  Alpha, Danfoss, Ellis, Flo Plast, Geberit, Grants, Grundfos, Invensys, Mitsibushi, Purmo, Rothenberger, Salus, Terrain, Thomas Dudley, Utopia and Worcester.

Colin also commented: “Our evening event went really well, with a very good family atmosphere and everyone enjoyed themselves.  We have raised just over £800.00 so far for Kidney Kids and we still have some pledges to come in.”

Colin continued: “Thanks again to our key manufacturers for their attendance and support and a big thank you to my team, who pulled together a very good all day event, whilst continuing with their day to day work.”

New Branch and Showroom at Kingston Bridge Opens.

In an exciting development for our company, we’ve successfully merged our Kinning Park branch and our Hillington showroom into one location in Glasgow.

The new premises are at Houston Place on the Kingston Trading Estate in Glasgow, and include a 3,000 sq ft showroom with room for more than 40 bathroom displays.

Branch Manager John Houston said:  “I’d like to thank my team for the hard work and commitment they have shown in getting us here.  There have been many challenges to overcome but the team has rallied round, pulled together and we’re now looking forward to the increased opportunities for sales growth our new location affords us.”

Bathroom Showroom Development Manager Lorraine Bend said: “We’ve developed an attractive and inspiring 3000 square foot bathroom showroom at Kingston Bridge.  It’ll be a centre of excellence for bathroom showroom products with the latest trends in bathrooms from all over Europe on display.  We have over 40 displays on site from leading bathroom companies like Kohler, Roca, Heritage and Ideal Standard and we’ll be offering a free CAD bathroom design service.”

Lorraine continued: “It’s very realistically set out, with room-sized displays rather than one big showroom. The old one was more like an exhibition, whereas this allows people to imagine the products as they would look in their homes.

“The customers have been amazed – we’ve had some fantastic reactions on how clean and bright it all looks – and the staff are enjoying being part of a bigger set-up.  It’s quite exciting for all of us, being in this fresh and modern environment.”

Deputy Managing Director Robin Mackinlay said:  “I’m convinced this new location will deliver an enhanced level of service to our customers.  Not only is the location more central and accessible, there are obvious benefits to having our sales counter and bathroom showroom under one roof.”

Inverurie Extension and Sales Counter Refurbishment

During July and August 2017 a warehouse extension was added to our Inverurie branch.  Approximately 1000sq feet of storage space has been added allowing Jon Marshall and his team to dispense with the temporary storage solutions that had been in place at the branch.

A sales counter refurbishment is planned through September.

Fort William Refurbishment Is Complete

During August 2017 we completed the internal refurbishment of our Fort William branch.  The works included a sales counter revamp and the installation of a mezzanine floor.

Chris and his team of did and excellent job, despite trading through some difficult conditions.

Ayr Branch Comes Through a Very Difficult Year

Like all well managed businesses William Wilson must be constantly aware of the fabric of our buildings and take investment decisions in order to keep our buildings in sound repair.  In July 2016 our Ayr branch was in the process of having its roof replaced when the very difficult decision to close the branch had to be taken following an asbestos survey.  

Traces of a very low risk asbestos product had been identified and, while the level was described by specialists as “satisfactory”, our senior management team felt the appropriate and absolutely right thing to do was to close the branch and allow a specialist company to thoroughly clean the warehouse, offices and trade counter before allowing normal operations to resume.

Needless to say this had very severe operational consequences!

The operational difficulties during the cleanup and construction phases were significant and very trying for our branch staff.  However in true “can do” spirit Ayr branch and their colleagues in other branches coped very well with the situation.  We also took the opportunity to give the external areas of the building a face-lift and to complete the internal rectification works to give the staff much needed improved working conditions.

Deputy Managing Director Robin Mackinlay said:  “I would like to thank you all for the support you have shown to Ayr branch.  The team at Ayr have fed back that not one single transfer request was refused and I know Kinning Park and Cumbernauld were incredibly supportive in terms of holding some of the larger stock orders, short-term for Ayr. “

“I would particularly like to thank our colleagues in Ayr, who have under the most difficult trading conditions imaginable, managed to continue to service their customers.”

Doug Gordon Retires After Thirty Two and a Half Years!

Long serving Elgin branch manager Doug Gordon retired from William Wilson at the end of June 2017. 

Doug’s retirement bash was held at the Mansfield Hotel Elgin on Sat 1st July.

More than 40 colleagues and guests attended Doug’s retirement meal and more than 30 customers joined him afterwards for drinks to help him celebrate.

We wish Doug a long and happy retirement.

Elgin Stalwart John Sinclair Retires

Elgin Warehouseman and golfer, John Sinclair retired at the end of July this year.  John joined us on the 11th of June 2001 spending 16 years with us in Elgin.

John’s retirement party and meal was held at the Ugie House Hotel Keith, on Saturday 28th July.  John was joined by many friends and colleagues including Elaine Ross, Lynne Munro, Scott Fairweather, Pat McDonald, Colin Brand, Mike Allan, Chris Stewart, Ann Sinclair, Ryan Leslie and Lesley Nash.

Speaking recently John said:  “I’ve only one more stock take to do and then it’s off to the land of golf and gardening!

We wish John a long, happy and healthy retirement.

New Branch Manager at South Street

Following Ross Dempsters decision to rejoin our Ayr branch, we’ve appointed Brian McCauley to the position of Branch Manager at our Glasgow South Street branch.

Brian joined us on the 7th of August 2017 and comes with thirteen years of previous experience working in plumbers merchants like Grahams and Plumbline.

Brian has worked for us previously in South Street.

Brand New Branch Manager at Elgin

Following Doug Gordon’s decision to retire at the end of June, we’ve appointed Colin Brand to the position of Branch Manager at our Elgin branch.

Colin joined us on the 19th of June and also comes with many years of previous experience in management. 

For the last thirteen years Colin has worked in the retail environment, with companies like B&Q, Sainsbury, Tesco and the Co-op.
